I saw this film about 8 years ago and found it a waste of my precious time and eye juice. I love film, particularly 'The Avengers' and 'I bought it in Pink'. However, I can't help but remember a feeling of dissapointment and anger after having watched this excuse for a film.

After your very enthusiastic and passionate review, I shall revisit the film and give it another chance. By the way, do not watch 'The last broadcast'. It is a truly awful and painful viewing experience. Not because it is disturbing but because I know that I will never be able to meet the makers of the film and beat them to death with their own mother's ironing boards.

Thanks for doing this up! We started hearing more about this movie in the wake of "Paranormal Activity"'s success of the "fake documentary" style. Don't know if I can stomach a viewing, though.

I must say that I think if CH did not have the infamous scenes it would certainly not have received the attention it did, and would possibly now just be considered alongside such films as Cannibal Ferox, Zombie Holocaust etc. i.e. reasonably well known within the community of horror fans but nowhere near as reveared as it is nowadays.

Sure, removing those scenes make for a much more pleasent experience, but that's not really the point of this movie. Watch it with the full turtle-shell and monkey scenes, but put your hands over your eyes if you prefer. Don't censor the film just because it's not to our tastes anymore. That would take away from the power of the movie.

Anyway, no, I don't think I noticed any special cameo's in Hostel. (Hmm, google search says "Takashi Miike". Not having seen him before I wouldn't have recognised him).

And yes, Deodato's cameo in Hostel 2 was inspired. I didnt quite clock that it was him until I saw him credited as "Italian Cannibal" at the end of the movie! Also, in the dvd's extras, Eli Roth is seen wearing a CH t-shirt, clearly a fan. And at the risk of banging on too much, did you spot the cameo in the original Hostel?

Great review. CH is a very misunderstood movie and I cant think of a movie that was more ahead of it's time. The use of real death in the Last Road To Hell sequence was very clever. You are told that the footage is fake whilst it is clearly real, messing with the audiences perspective of what is real and what is not. The animal cruelty is horrific and certainly not entertaining to watch but it makes the audience think, "if this is real, then what else is real...". There is a fully uncut version out there of the movie that gives you the option to play the movie with these scenes removed however and Deodato has said that he regrets those parts of CH but at the same time he points out that it was food for the tribes they were working with in the jungle and nothing went to waste, so to speak. The film has lots of tricks up its sleeve to confuse and muddle the reality of what you are watching, even down to the on-screen message at the start of the film stating "For the sake of authenticity, some of the
sequences have been retained in their entirety". This is, of course, nonsense.

Deodato did have plans for a follow up but that was recently shelved for unknown reasons.

CH is a horrible film but it's intelligence places it leagues above the other films in the cannibal genre that were released in the 80's. As for it being a Blair Witch influence, of course it is but a more recent movie called "The Last Broadcast" seems to be more of an influence on the Sanchez/Myrick classic.

Pah. This film totally ripped off Blair Witch Project. (despite coming out a decade or so before).
I liked Deodato's scene in Hostel 2 where he's eating some dudes leg. That was awesome.
